Dan Fogelberg

31 December, 2007

I am sad to read that Dan Fogelberg died on 16 December, after battling prostate cancer. Since 1972 Fogelberg’s music, especially his lyrics, have kept me company along the way. I think his lyrics revealed a particular insight into relationships — principally romantic relationships but also, as those who know his song Leader of the Band will testify, father/son relationships.

Fogelberg understood honesty, intimacy, brokenness and poignancy in life. He didn’t write cheap lyrics. See http://www.danfogelberg.com/index.html

Fogelberg matured during the 60s music scene and managed to endure without much artistic compromise. His passing is yet another marker of the ‘dust of death’ all around us.
