Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen)

18 January, 2008

(German) 2006 written and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. This Academy Award winner is an outstanding film and probably one of my top 5 films. The best thing is to watch it on DVD so to see the director’s and principal actors’ interviews. The film centres around the subversive nature of the lives of others (Martina Gedeck and Sebastian Koch) one particular Stasi agent (played brilliantly by the late Ulrich Mühe) spies. The juxtaposition of his own empty life (and that of the East German state) and what he perceives within the lives of the others is brilliant. It raises all sorts of questions about humanity, the state and what constitutes authenticity. It is worth seeing a number of times!

    Hi Gavin.

I loved The Lives of Others.

I blogged about it on my Blog. The link doesn’t appear to ‘stick’ when I submit my comment. I will give it to you tomorrow.

    Good to meet you.
